2015 Leinster Orienteering Championship Results

posted 20 Apr 2015, 09:52 by Elaine Sheridan

The 2015 Leinster Orienteering Championship took place yesterday Sunday April 19th near Lough Firrib in the Wicklow Mountains National Park and in the Coillte Oakwood forest. The majority of courses included a mix of open mountain and woodland terrain. The shorter courses were confined to a charming bit of Oak woodland which included numerous line features such as walls. While the woodland utilised on the longer courses was feature rich with boulders and crags dispersed throughout and numerous open areas. This variable woodland led to mixed runnability and the wood was physical and rather damp underfoot in places.

26 members from CorkO made the journey east to Wicklow for this event. Thankfully, the weather gods were kind to us on this visit and the clear skies afforded all competitors stunning views of the picturesque Wicklow Mountain’s National Park.

CorkO had a number of podium finishers throughout the age classes. On the elite courses Darren Burke finished first on the 11.8km M21E courses with less than 30 seconds to spare over his nearest rival which Niamh Corbett finished third on the W21E.

It was fabulous to see our younger members being rewarded for their orienteering exploits. The Kelly Morrish family featured prominently on the day as did the father and daughter duo of Agris and Zane seen here proudly displaying their prize winning mugs.

The full list of CorkO podium finishers is as follows:

M16 2nd Cameryn Kelly Morrish
M21E 1st Darren Burke
M21L 1st Agris Kramins
M35L 2nd Brian Corbett
M60L 3rd Liam O’Brien
W10 2nd Zane Kramina
W10 3rd Mia Kelly Morrish
W14 3rd Jessie Kelly Morrish
W21E 3rd Niamh Corbett

Well done to all who participated on the day. Full individual results with split times are available here.

Thanks to Setanta orienteers for staging the event.

The next destination for our touring CorkO members will be the Irish Orienteering Championships in and around Lisburn over the May Bank Holiday weekend.
