Munster League #3: Glengarra Wood, Tipperary SUNDAY FEBRUARY 23RD Event Info

The third event in the 2020 Munster League will take place on Sunday February 23rd at Glengarra Wood, Tipperary. This a very scenic forest with two areas of Millennium Forest planting! Mixed forestry, good road/track network and open moorland. There will be courses to suit all levels of orienteering ability.

Brown            8.4km     27 controls, 230m climb
Blue               7.5km     21  controls, 200m climb
Green             5.3km     18  controls, 150m climb
Light Green    4.1km     14  controls, 130m climb
Red                3.5km      12  controls, 80m climb
Orange           3.0km     10  controls, 75m climb
Yellow             2.2km      7  controls, 60m climb

Planers Notes:
  • Routes through the forest are quite runnable (minimal brashings or brambles) and there is an extensive road and path network.
  • Tarmaced road on the map is bounded by unmapped wire fence (easy to pass through).
  • There are a few areas on the map surrounded by mapped high wire fences, these have been in place for 20 years and the timber supports are rotting and they are unsafe to attempt to cross. Entry and exit should be by paths to gateways.
  • Depending on weather conditions it may be unsafe to cross the main stream except at the permanent bridges.

DIRECTIONS
****************
Glengarra Wood is very accessible from Cork and Dublin via the M8 motorway. Parking is in the first car park on the right hand side, after you enter the woods.

* From Cork city, take the M8 northbound as far as Junction 12, signposted Mitchelstown/Kilbeheny. Take the R639 through the villages of Kilbeheny and Skeheenarinky. Glengarra Wood is on the left hand side of the road, approx. 3km from Skeheenarinky, and 500m after passing under a wide bridge.
* From Dublin/Waterford, take the M8 southbound and exit at Junction 11, signposted Kilbeheny/Skeheenarinky. Follow the R639 south, passing Kilcoran Lodge on your right. Once you pass a turn for Burncourt and Mitchelstown Caves on your left, the entrance to the woods is 500m on the right hand side of the road.
