Summer League #1: Fota House and Gardens TUESDAY MAY 13TH Event Info

posted 8 May 2014, 17:30 by Elaine Sheridan
The first event in the 2014 CorkO Summer League will take place next Tuesday May 13th at Fota House and Gardens.

Fota's arboretum and gardens are internationally recognised and have the finest collections of rare and tender trees and shrubs grown outdoors in Ireland and Britain and I'm sure their colours will provide a stunning backdrop for Tuesday's orienteering event. Our event planner captured a few images of this picturesque area while planning Tuesday's courses (see photo right). Unfortunately some of these historic trees suffered as a result of the gale force winds we experienced earlier this year you can see the results in the picture below.

This beautiful parkland terrain provides an ideal location to commence our Summer League. With a good network of paths the area is very buggy friendly. This location always proves popular with families and is a delightful area for beginners and those new to the sport to embark on some orienteering adventures. The Sprint-O nature of the landscape will also provide several challenges for our experienced orienteers and the fast pace will mean that every second really will count.

Short course: 1.7km (buggy friendly)
Long course: 4.2 km

Fota is one of the only orienteering events in the country that you can get to directly by train! Timetables on

If travelling by car from Cork city take the N25 East and take the exit for Cobh. The entrance to the House and Gardens will be on your right as you travel along the R624. Take care with the bends on the road.

Further directions and area trivia are available here.

Registration will be in the car park from 5.15pm - 7.00pm.

If you are bringing your car, bear in mind that there is a 3 euro charge to exit the car park, so remember to bring your 1 and 2 euro coins. Car pool if you can.

Our Summer League prices remain unchanged:
Adult: EUR 5
Junior/Student/OAP: EUR 3
Family: EUR 10
SI Card Hire: EUR 2

Hope to see you there.
