Autumn League #4: 12th Annual Cliona Callanan Memorial Orienteering Event Sunday September 17th Results and Report

The 12th Annual Cliona Callanan Memorial Orienteering Event took place in Doneraile Park on Sunday September 17th. All participants received a warm welcome from our north cork crew and all their family and friends who assisted at the event. The Callanan Family would like to thank everyone who competed, supported and helped with Cliona's event on Sunday in Doneraile Park. A big thank you to everyone who traveled from near and far to support and compete in the annual Clíona Callanan Memorial Event in Doneraile Park. The sunshine attracted a crowd of over 250 people who walked, jogged, and ran one of the four courses on offer (see results for some close finishes). It was a really lovely occasion, with young and old alike enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Doneraile Park, including two scout groups from Mallow and Rathcormac. Thanks to the generosity of everyone, we raised €1750 on the day, with all proceeds going to the Cork Children's Leukaemia Association (CLA). A special thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success, namely the Sleeman-Power, O'Leary-Fitzpatrick, and Lucey familes, Liam O'Brien, and the OPW.
All donations received by CLA are used to benefit children who suffer from leukaemia, cancer and other serious blood disorders in the Munster region. The Charity provides financial support to families, counselling and support groups for patients, parents and siblings during this difficult time in their lives. They fund educational support to children who are out of school for long periods during their illness, they also provide free home-from-home accommodation for families who have to travel long distances to hospital. Donations also go to towards the purchase of essential medical equipment and further training for staff who work at the Children's Leukaemia Unit.

There were four courses on offer on the day which catered for all levels from beginners to experienced orienteers looking for a long and technical run on a Sunday morning. This event was also the fourth event in the on-going CorkO Autumn League and as a result there was some fierce competition on all of the courses on the day.
On the Short course the first to cross the finish line was James Magner who finished in a time of 21:32. Less than a minute behind James were the O'Shea siblings. Jack and Colin battled it out for the runner up honor and just two seconds separated them at the finish. Jack claiming the runner-up spot having finished in a time of 22:15. Colin took third in a time of 22:17.
On the Even Shorter course there was a lot of team work among the podium finishers. Michelle and Grainne pooled their navigational skills to win the course in a time of 14:31. The runner-up spot went to Peter and Oisin when they punched all 9 controls in a time of 15:32 while Chloe and Julianne finished third in a time of 20:36.
On the Long course there were 21 controls and it was Meabh Perkins who punched them all in the fastest time. She completed the course in a time of 45:37 and held off a strong challenge from her Mum Nora to claim the Long course event win. Runner-up was Nora Perkins who narrowly edged out Matthew Kearney for the honor. She finished in a time of 46:11. The final podium spot went to Matthew Kearney who finished in a time of 46:24.
On the Even Longer Course the winner was Zac O'Sullivan-Hourihan, he completed the course in a time of 32:59 just four seconds clear of his nearest rival Dan McDonnell. Dan had to be content with second place and he had a fairly comfortable winning margin over our third place finisher Emer Perkins. Emer finished in a time of 37:22.
