Munster League #3: Seefin (The Nagles) Sunday March 22nd Results and Report

Post date: Mar 24, 2015 11:50:39 PM

The third event in the 2015 Munster League took place in Seefin in the The Nagle mountains of North Cork. Almost 60 competitors ventured out on a very foggy Sunday morning but thankfully by the time they arrived at their orienteering destination the fog had lifted to reveal some stunning views across the Nagles.

The competitors had six courses to choose from all of which offered their own challenges. The terrain was rough in places and participants had to negotiate their way around numerous felled trees. There was an abundance of earth walls to aid navigation on various legs. As the morning progressed the blue skies appeared and there was definitely a sense of Spring in the air. In the forest itself some delicate foot work was required to avoid the numerous pools of frogs spawn. The Common Frog, is the only native frog we have in this country and is now a protected species due to the declining populations.

So whose winter training has been most effective? Well on the 7.8km Brown it was Brian Corbett who blitzed the rest of the field finishing in an impressive time of 66:58. Richard Latimer took the honours on the Blue Course finishing in a time of 66:10 and Ben Gearey led the way on the Green course finishing it in a time of 63:54. Dan McDonnell made short work of the 3.2km Light Green when he finished in a time of 35:54 which was almost 20 minutes ahead of his nearest competitor. With 16 participants on the day the Orange course proved the most competitive and it was two members from the Fermoy Scouts who battled it out for the top place on the day. However it was Eoin O'Brien who took the spoils finishing in a time of 23:36.

Well done to all who competed on the day. Full individual results with splits and route gadget can be found here.

A huge thanks to John O'Donovan for planning the event, Darren Burke for controlling and John Scannell for organising the event. Thanks also to Donal Burke, Bobby O'Connor, Jim O'Donovan, Gerald Duffy and Danny O'Hare who assisted with registration and control collection on the day.

Our next club event will be on Tuesday May 12th at Fota House and Gardens where we will kick start our 2015 Summer Orienteering League.

Hope you can join us.
