Munster League #4: Rosskerrig Results and Report

Post date: Apr 22, 2013 10:58:1 PM

The 4th event in the 2013 Munster League took place at Rosskerrig, Kilcrohane on Sunday last. Over forty participants made the journey to The Sheep's Head peninsula and were rewarded with some great courses on what truly is fantastic terrain. Thankfully the rain showers on the day were only fleeting and the sun even made an appearance.

The terrain comprised of rough open ground featuring much detail in terms of re-entrants, crags and marshes. The longer courses took competitors Northwards onto some of the steeper areas of the map. Distinguishing features such as fences, uncrossable marshes and impassable crags assisted those who needed to re-locate. However despite the rugged nature of the terrain with all the exposed rock the going was fast in places provided you didn't get too bogged down in the numerous marshes and this is most evident in some of the course winning times.

Hopefully this open terrain practise will stand to all those venturing up to the Irish Orienteering Championships on the May bank holiday weekend. So based on the results who will be the bookies favourites to bring back some championship titles to Cork!

On the Brown course Darren Burke set a blistering pace and finished it in a time of 78:52. He had a significant winning margin over second place finisher Colm O'Halloran, who completed the course in a time of 104:23. The final podium place on the brown course went to Pat O'Donovan who had a time of 108:40.

Things were a good deal closer on the Blue course and it was Tony Cotter who took the honours with a winning time of 88:54. However second place finisher Aidan Kelleher was hot on his heels and completed the course in a time of 89:04. Not far adrift of Aidan was Niamh Corbett who claimed third place with a time of 91:02.

On the Green Niall McCarthy set an impressive winning time of 33:57 giving himself plenty of time to spare over second place finisher Willie Fitzgerald. Willie completed the Green course in a time of 58:44. Rory Costello managed to complete the course in exactly one hour and was rewarded with third place for his efforts.

On the Orange course Damian Boyce was fastest on the day with a time of 28:53. Dee Nolan was just 8 seconds behind him and she took second place. There was a dead heat for third place with both Ivor and Craig Bateman finishing in a time of  34:19.

Full individual results and splits are available here.

The event has also been added to Route Gadget so if have a GPS route please do up load it or alternatively if you recall the route you took around your course you can also draw it in.

Thanks to Brian Corbett for planning the courses and Liz Deane for organising the event. Thanks also to Jim O'Donovan and Bobby O'Connor who assisted on the day.
