Munster League #6: Knockaculleta Forest Sunday Nov 11th Event Info

Post date: Nov 05, 2012 11:20:40 PM

The sixth event in this years Munster League will be held at Knockaculleta Forest on Sunday November 11th.Our club members Jim O'Donovan and Bobby O'Connor have been very busy over the past few months updating and re-mapping this area. So it is an orienteering opportunity not to be missed as this will be a new area to nearly all those taking part. There was previously an orienteering map of the area drawn by a Comd Kelly of the Defence Forces around 1975 which continued in use until the very early 80's when it fell into disuse due to clear felling. The area is unlike anything else we have orienteered over in recent years as an extensive area is covered with 30-40 year old trees. The road network is limited in places and there are limited line features (very few ditches) and only vague contour detail. Make sure you bring your compass- you will need it, at times you will be in white forest that looks the same in all directions. Some of the wood was recently thinned so there are a few brashings, there is also a little bramble in a few areas. Some areas of the forest are extremely fast going. In view of the very limited climb (I kid you not) we expect fast times.

There will be six courses on offer

Yellow 2.9k 30M climb 10 controls

Orange 2.9K 30M climb 13 controls

Light Green 5.1k 60M climb 13 controls

Green 6.2k 65M climb 13 controls

Blue 8.8k 100M climb 20 controls

Brown 9.5k 110M climb 22 controls

First start 11.00, control collection from 2.30

Event can be approached from the Bottle hill to Killavullen road, turn east on the Glenville road (signposts read Killavullen 5k Glenville 14k) the event is less than 2k up the road.

Alternative approach is through Glenville, drive up through the village and continue out the top road, we will signpost the junctions for the event - in general you are heading in the Mallow direction.

So don't miss out on the chance to see the new map and experience this terrain which will be new to most competitors.

Here are some Google maps with directions from Cork city.
