Munster League #8: Glengarra Wood Sunday October 12th Results and Report

Glengarra Wood located on the southern slopes of the Galtee Mountains was the destination for the eighth event in the 2014 Munster League. The 84 competitors in action on the day were greeted with glorious sunshine and challenging and scenic terrain. We were especially delighted to welcome a large contingent from Waterford Orienteers (WATO) who journeyed to the event. The narrow start window created a more social atmosphere at the start and finish and no doubt competitors crossed paths more frequently on the terrain as a result. The courses on the day were physically and mentally demanding but we hope you all enjoyed the orienteering in these stunning environs. The ground in Glengarra slopes down towards the river which splits the map and several of the courses required competitors to traverse this river on numerous occasions. While there are a number of bridges to allow access to either side of the river often the shortest route involved a more direct line. Thankfully, the water levels were unusually low for this time of year and the water wasn’t too cold!
The longer courses on the day took competitors around the old hunting lodge. In fact some contestants may even have encountered some deer on their adventure in Glengarra on Sunday morning. The courses which took competitors to the Northern most section of the map and out onto the open terrain afforded participants spectacular vistas of the surrounding Galtee Mountains. The clear blue sky providing the perfect backdrop to accentuate the mountain profile and the bright day highlighted the varied colours of the landscape. Following the arduous courses competitors were treated to some very welcome post run refreshments! Well done to all who took part on the day. Agris is more familiar with Latvian terrain and this was his first time planning an event in Ireland. So thanks for taking on the task and planning testing courses. Thanks also to Rob McEvoy for controlling the event, Sharon Lucey for helping with registration, John Scannell and Gerald Duffy for assisting with control collection. Our next club event will be the second round of the Cork League which will take place in Walshtown Wood, Dungourney on Sunday November 23rd. So chalk that down in your orienteering diary and hopefully we’ll see you there. In the meantime if you are looking for some orienteering events to attend why not consider participating at one of our neighbouring club events. KerryO will be holding an event at Ross Castle and Island next Sunday October 19th and if you haven’t already made plans for the Bank Holiday weekend then why not consider attending all or part of the Deise Day Weekend being organised by WatO.
