SL2013 Teams Update after Event 6

Post date: Jun 20, 2013 11:13:40 AM

Team scores have now been updated following this week's Summer League event at James' Fort. We announced the teams earlier this week based on the individual results from the first 5 league events, so James' Fort was the first opportunity for people to meet their new team-mates (and new rivals!). Some of the teams were very close this week - full details are available here. (See also here for Elaine's race report with individual results.)

The top team this week was Team True North with 11 points. Even though they were without their highest-ranked male and female members on the Long course, the team members on the Short course made an excellent effort with results from Finbarr Scannell, Carmel O'Neill, Jerry Moynihan and Una Buckley (plus 3-week-old Laoise!) all counting towards the team score. Ann Conroy on the Long course brought the team home as the fifth best team member.

Hot on their heels was Team Magnetic North, who finished the event with a combined total of 15 points. The team drew on the strength of first lady Niamh Corbett on the Long course, with Sean Murphy and Francis Harrington also producing solid runs and scoring good points for the team on the men's Long course. Short course finishers Sarah Fitzgerald and Jamie Condon rounded off the scores for Team Magnetic North.

Team South followed in close succession with a total of 17 points this week. Here it was the team's youngest member, Fiadh O'Leary, who scored best. Fiadh's average placing from the first 5 events was 31.5, so she came to James' Fort carrying 20 handicap points. Her impressive 16th place on the Short course this week earned -4 points for Team South. Highest ranked on Team South is Joe Bosonnet and he didn't disappoint this week, earning 2 points for his team. Christine Maunsell and Dave Sweeney earned points on the Long Course, and organiser Liz Deane earned 5 organiser points.

Next best at James' Fort was Team South-East, with 19 points. Highest-ranked team member Jonathan Lucey scored 3 points on the Long course for the team, but it was Sean Bosonnet on the Short course who scored best for Team South-East. Strong performances by Thomas Callery, Dermot Gallagher, Deirdre Creedon and The Tuesdays also helped to make up the team's 19 points.

The other teams generally had lower turn-outs this week and scored as follows:

Team West 34 points

Team East 35 points

Team South-West 46 points

Team North-East 55 points

Despite their top seeds Rob McEvoy and Ailbhe Creedon scoring 2 points each on the Long Course, Team North-West only had one other runner, Sarah Scannell, who scored an impressive -3 points for the team on the Short course. Unfortunately a team needs 5 orienteers to complete the course in order for the team score to count, so hopefully more members of Team North-West will turn up next week!

So after 6 events, the total team scores are as follows:

All but two teams have completed the necessary 5 events. With 4 events left to count in the Summer League (Moanbaun Wood Watergrasshill; Ballyannon Wood Midleton; UCC Campus Cork; Curragh Wood Midleton), teams have a month to work on improving their scores. Remember, at the end of the league, it is the best 5 weekly team scores that will count towards a team final score - so it is still all to play for!
