Summer League #5: Walshtown Wood TUESDAY JUNE 10TH Event Info

Post date: Jun 06, 2014 12:35:46 PM

The fifth event in the Cork Orienteering Club Summer League will take place on TUESDAY JUNE 10TH at WALSHTOWN WOOD near Dungourney. This particular map of Walshtown Wood is relatively new so even our Summer League regulars won't be too familiar with this terrain. The map has a good network of tracks and rides together with an amount of feature detail in some parts, in other places it has a large area of open woodland intersected by a single forest road with very sparse ground movement or feature detail. A compass may be beneficial in these areas.Last year at this location the Corbett men demonstrated their map reading prowess when both father and son claimed first and second place respectively on the Long courses. So can anyone challenge them this year? From the league tables there are certainly many who have the pace but will the new map expose any weakness in their navigational skills?

The challenging terrain in Walshtown will surely provide an excellent opportunity to reel them in. Remember to check out our website over the weekend for more on the Ten Elements of Orienteering. The latest video might help give you the edge at Tuesday's event.

COURSE INFO

Long course is 4.3km with c20 controls

Short course is 3.0km with c 9 controls.

Sadly, Walshtown is not particularly buggy friendly and there maybe one or two obstacles on the short course that means it will be problematic for buggies.

This event will see a return to the usual electronic punching. So don't forget your SI card!
