Summer League #7: Moanbaun Wood TUESDAY JUNE 25th Event Info

The next event in the CorkO Summer League will take place at Moanbaun Wood (outside Watergrasshill) on Tuesday 25th June. The landscape in Moanbaun Wood is mixture of semi-open forest, rough undergrowth, and open forest with a good road network, many earth walls and some streams. With recent rainfall, the going could be quite muddy underfoot. *Leg cover is recommended* on both the Short and the Long courses. Midge repellent could also be useful.Start times as usual will be from 5.30pm - 7.00pm, and courses will close at 7.45pm.Map scale: 1:7500 with 10m contours.

There will be two courses on offer:

The *Short course* will be just over 3km long and is suitable for family groups and beginners-improvers. The terrain will vary from forest roads to narrow forest tracks, with some short sections of forest run (marked as white on the map). Unfortunately the narrower tracks are not buggy-friendly.

The *Long course* will be slightly longer than in previous weeks; about 5.5km if you take the best route. The terrain will vary from forest run to slow run and walk, and less experienced competitors are advised to be familiar with the map colours for the different types of vegetation, as well as the symbols for earth and water features:

http://www.corko.net/what-is-orienteering/map-symbols (these will also be on display at registration). The controls will be off the paths but in all cases it should be possible to use a linear feature (path, earth wall, stream, etc.) to navigate to the control.

The Fir Tree in Watergrasshill is now serving food on Tuesday evenings, the perfect location to re-fuel and chat about your adventures in the forest.

DIRECTIONS:

The wood is about 3km East of Watergrasshill. If travelling from Cork city, exit the M8 Dublin motorway at Watergrasshill (at junction 17, BEFORE the

toll), use the bridge to cross over the motorway, turn left, and after 500m take the right turn for Leamlara/Kartworld. Follow this road for 3.5km.

From Fermoy/Mitchelstown/Cahir, exit the M8 just after the toll, go straight through the roundabout and take the left after 100m (signposted

Leamlara/Kartworld). Follow this road for 3.5km.
