Summer League #8: Tramore Valley Park Event Info

Post date: Jun 24, 2012 5:37:37 PM

Hi Folks,

The 8th leg of the Cork O Summer League takes place at Tramore Valley Park almost in the heart of the city. This is the new name for the old landfill site just off the South Link road.

Directions:

1. If you are coming out of Cork City on the South Link Road, just turn left into the park.

2. If you are coming from the direction of the Kinsale Road Roundabout then please note you CANNOT turn right off the South Link Road and into the park. Instead at the Kinsale Road Roundabout take the exit which will take you down passed Harvey Normans, then turn right at the next junction and drive passed the entrance to the Black Ash Park and Ride. At the junction with the South Link drive straight through the traffic lights (once they turn green!) and into the park

and follow signs to car parking area.

Officially start times are from 5:30pm to 7pm. However starts should be ready at about the 5:00pm, If you start in or around 7pm you'd better get a move on because the first controls will be collected from 7:30pm. We all (including organizes!) need to be out of the park by 8pm at the latest. Gates are closed at that time.

The 1:5000 map consists of the 2.5m contoured grassed landfill hill that you can see from the N25 city bypass. Around the hill are some ancillary roads, paths, rough open and a lot of dense vegetation along with a rugby pitch!. The long course is 5.8km with 105m climb. Don't be put off by the length of the course. The going will be fast. Straight line is the optimum route choice except on the one or two legs where you have the classic orienteering decision of 'do I go over or around the hill?'.The short course is 2.7km with 20m climb and is primarily on tarred or dirt roads. This course is very buggy friendly. There are one or two opportunities for the more adventurous orienteers to gain a few seconds by attempting a straight line route. But to gain time here you must run with conviction and of course do not stray from the intended route. There is a swale around the landfill hill. It is particularly deep (after all the rain lately) on the southern half of the map and should only be crossed using the footbridges provided. A strictly no smoking policy is also in place all around the park. Finally if you would just like to go for a walk around the park without orienteering please do so. But park in the assigned parking area and wear a high viz bib. Similarly if you finish your run early and would be prepared to don an officials high viz bib and just look officious that would help to give a more professional image of the event. There might be some City Council officials observing proceedings for future reference.Regards,Liam O'Brien(Planner)
