Post date: Jul 05, 2013 9:56:47 AM

Hi all,

The 9th event in the CorkO Summer League will take place next Tuesday, 9th July at University College Cork main campus in Cork city. The university boasts many impressive buildings including the Quadrangle, the Crawford Observatory and the Glucksman Gallery. We hope that you will come along and enjoy navigating around the beautiful campus grounds on the banks of the Lee.

-----------

START:

-----------

There is an entrance to UCC campus next to the site of the old Cork County Gaol (on Gaol Walk).

For people not familiar with UCC, this entrance is in the NW corner of the campus.

Please do not to walk through UCC main campus on your way to the Start.

Start times, as usual, will be 5.30pm - 7.00pm. Courses will close and control collection will begin at 7.45pm.

--------------------

DIRECTIONS:

--------------------

If you are driving next Tuesday, the best place to park is Perrot's Inch car park, which is just off Gaol Walk, near the junction with Western Road (see map here: http://www.ucc.ie/en/media/siteassets/contentassets/maps/Web2012VisitorParking.pdf) Parking for the first hour at Perrot's Inch costs EUR 1, and it's EUR 2 per hour for each additional hour. Any time spent after 6.30pm is charged at a maximum of EUR 2. This car park is right next to the Start.

There are some on-street car parking spaces on Mardyke Walk near Fitzgerald Park; these are disc parking up until 6.30pm and free after 6.30pm. Beware, any on-street parking closer to UCC (on Donovan's Road, etc.) is disc parking up until 8.30pm.

You can also take the number 208 bus to Western Road and walk the short distance along Gaol Walk to the Start.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

----------------------------------------

After 2 weeks in a row of forest orienteering, navigation in this urban setting will be a change for most. This type of orienteering is called Sprint-O, where the courses are short, fast and involve lots of direction changes. The winning times Sprint-O courses are no longer than 15 minutes. Course lengths on Tuesday will be: Short 1.1km (10 controls); Long 2.8km (20 controls).

The campus map has been drawn to ISSOM (International Specification for Sprint Orienteering Maps) and has slightly different symbols than normal orienteering maps - the event Controller has asked us to remind competitors to be familiar with these symbols, so please check them out here. Last month at our Shamrock O-Ringen event, Former British Champion & twice World Masters Sprint champion Nick Barrable gave us a talk on Sprint Orienteering - these are the slides from his talk, for anyone looking for an extra edge on Tuesday evening.

--------------

SAFETY:

--------------

UCC is a great area for orienteering and we rely on the goodwill of the UCC staff to allow us to hold events. Please obey the following rules so that UCC Orienteers can continue to host events on campus:

- Please be careful on the campus roads, yield to cars and cyclists

- If your course has a mandatory road crossing, then please only cross the road at this point and obey the crossing marshal

- Please do not run through buildings (with the exception of underpasses, marked in grey on the map)

- UCC is a busy campus so please don't run into any predestrians

- Please do not trample on flower beds

- Please do not climb over fences or walls - all fences and walls are to be treated as uncrossable.

You will be reminded of these rules prior to receiving your map.

LEAGUE STUFF:

--------------------------

There are 3 events left in the Summer League: UCC Campus; Curragh Woods and Farran Forest Park. If you are chasing a Summer League t-shirt, then all three events can count towards the six you need to qualify for the t-shirt. However, only UCC Campus and Curragh Woods will count towards the Individual and Team results. So if you want to improve on your current standing and at the same time do your bit for your team then hopefully we'll see you at UCC on Tuesday.
