Watergrasshill Orienteering event, Sunday 20th January

Post date: Jan 15, 2013 7:23:48 PM

Hi,

The next Cork Orienteering Club event is a 'Cork league' event at Moanbaun Wood, Watergrasshill on Sunday next, January 20th.

Moanbaun is a relatively flat wood over 3km long and 1km to 2km wide.

The map scale is 1:10,000 and the landscape is mixture of semi-open forest, rough undergrowth, and open forest with a good road network and many earthwalls and some streams. At this time of year the undergrowth is not so dense, but full leg cover is still recommended for the longer courses.

--START TIMES

11am to 1pm. Courses close at 2pm.

--COURSE INFO

The course details are as follows:

Blue 7.5km, 140m climb, 15 controls

Green 5.7km, 95m climb, 14 controls

Orange 3.6km, 45m climb, 12 controls

Yellow 2.9km 35m climb, 8 controls

The yellow course is child-buggy friendly.

As there have been significant amounts of rainfall recently the Blue and Green courses will be quite muddy/wet underfoot in places.

The orange course should be reasonably dry, but do expect the odd muddy bit. Some infrequent wet patches can be avoidable by longer route choices.

--DIRECTIONS

The wood is about 3km East of Watergrasshill.

If travelling from Cork city exit the M8 Dublin motorway at Watergrasshill (at junction 17, before the toll), cross over the motorway, turn left, and after 500m take the right turn for Leamlara/Kartworld. Follow this road for 3.5km.

From Fermoy/Mitchelstown/Cahir exit the M8 just after the toll, go straight through the roundabout and take the left after 100m.

Parking on one side of the road only.

--VOLUNTEERS

If you feel like volunteering a bit of your time on Sunday to help at the event, I'd appreciate some assistance with the following tasks:

-Putting out direction signs for traffic coming to the event (signs need to be up from 10:30am)

-Collecting 8 or 9 controls after the event (2pm to 3pm)

-Registration or entrants (one can do an hour between 11 and 1)

-Downloading results from finishers (do an hour between 11:30 and 2)

If you can help out let me know. Remember your orienteering club is what you make it!

Regards,

Gerald.
