2024 Summer League Leaderboard after Penultimate Event
It is hard to believe that the final event of the 2024 CorkO Summer League takes place this evening July 16th at Fota House and Gardens.
Again huge thanks to all those who have attended any of our 2024 Summer League events to date we couldn't host the events without your continued support each week.
Ahead of this evening's event it is time for another recap on the leaderboard and for some stats updates before the conclusion of the league this evening.
Just a reminder that competitors must finish 6 events to complete this year's league and receive their league finisher memento. Based on the latest league tables there are currently 27 individual who have completed the league. These dedicated summer league followers have already earned their 2024 league finisher memento. Another 13 orienteers can join them if they attend this evenings final summer league event.
Heading into the eighth event in the league there was still lots of permutations for reshuffling in the leaderboards across the various categories based on who attended and how good a run they had. However, CorkO stalwart Darren Burke made a surprise appearance at last Tuesday's event and claimed the event win on the night thus denying some of the regular 2024 summer league participants the opportunity for maximum improvement in their league standings. The testing course on the night also proved challenging for some and as a result after eight fiercely competitive events the final number of permutations in the league tables has reduced significantly heading into our final event.
Prior to last weeks event in Warrenscourt Wood Joe Bosonnet had already secured the 2024 Long Course Men's Championship title. Despite this another top five finish further strengthened his position at the top of the leaderboard and his points total now stands at 11. Fionn Buckley's attendance and podium finish at last Tuesday's event earned him league finisher status and bumped him up to the runner up spot with a total of 25 points. His elevation resulted in Fionn O'Callaghan dropping down one place to third. Fionn O'Callaghan had a good run in Warrenscourt and his sixth place finished allowed him to discard one of his earlier higher finishes thus reducing his points tally to 34.
There is still a possibility for two league candidates to muscle their way into podium spots. Both Jonathon Lucey and Colm O'Sullivan require just one more event to complete the league and in doing so they could dislodge either Fionn! Jonathon Lucey currently has 24 points and a first place finish would see him match Fionn Buckley current tally and overtake Fionn O'Callaghan. Equally a top five finish from Colm O'Sullivan in Fota House and Gardens would see him match Fionn O'Callaghan's current points tally while anything higher would elevate him to third place. We must also remember that the Fionn's attendance this evening also presents them with the opportunity to improve their own league standing by bettering some of their current event positions and reducing their final points tally in the process.
The Long Course Women's leaderboard has experienced a bit of a reshuffle since our last results update. Caroline Murray's attendance and runner up finish at Warrenscourt Wood has lifted her to the top of the leaderboard. She currently has 10 points and it doesn't look like any of the chasers can match or better this at our final event. An uncharacteristic DNF from the reigning Summer League Women's Champion Mary O'Brien at last weeks event meant she didn't improve her overall standing and now sits in second place with 14 points. Even with an event win tonight the best points total she can now achieve is 12 which won't be sufficient to deny Caroline the 2024 Long Course Women's Championship title. Caroline's rise has also demoted Niamh Morrissey to third place. However, Niamh's third place finish around the testing course in Warrenscourt meant she reduced her current points total to just 23. Based on the current league standings it doesn't look like any ladies in the field can muscle their way onto the podium. However, there is very little separating the next three league finishers as Elaine Sheridan and Liz Deane are presently tied on 33 points while Sienna Bosonnet is just 4 points behind them on 37 points. There are still lots of bragging rights at stake in Fota tonight!
Following eight events Aoife Mannix has the Short Course Champion title secured. Another event win by her last week saw her knock a massive 6 points off her total and she now stands at 16 points and can't be surpassed. Elsewhere there were quite a bit of movement in the Short course leaderboad. The Collins siblings Abbey and Daithi completed their sixth event and have now risen into second and third place respectively. With just one event left based on the current league table there is only one competitor that can dislodge our current runner up and third place finishers. Emer McCarthy requires just one more event to obtain league finisher status. Her current points total is 33 so a good clean run by her this evening could bag her a podium finish on the Short course. The Collins sibling could potentially improve their overall league totals and strengthen their current grip on their respective podium spots. It certainly looks like it will be an exciting finish to this year's Short course competition.
Looking down the leaderboard there are still lots of rivalries at play across all the league categories between families, friends and orienteering rivals there are lots of honours still to play for. So don't miss the last opportunity to improve your own league standing by bettering some of your current event positions and reducing your final points tally in the process.
