Watergrasshill
The forest covers an area of 300 hectares and lies on a plateau on high exposed ground. A fine network of wide paths makes the area buggy friendly. Traditionally this map would have favoured fast runners due to the ability to gain valuable time over competitors on these tracks. However recent map updates have enhanced the map with the mapping of several new areas of forest run. As a result vegetation boundaries and forest rides are important features when navigating between controls.
In recent summers competitors have proved to be tasty targets for the resident midges. So be advised if you have insect repellent be sure to bring it with you as it might make for a more enjoyable run!
Map Scale: 1:10,000Parking: There is a small car park at the main entrance to the forest but the majority of competitors will have to park on the right hand side of the road leading up to the forest entrance when approaching from Watergrasshill.Forest TriviaThe wood is also referred to as Moanbaun – White Bog. Probably derived from the dominant vegetation found growing throughout the wood i.e. molinia or purple moor grass. This takes on a grey-white appearance during autumn and winter.
One of Ireland’s most endangered species, Hen harrier, has been seen hovering over the woodland.
