2024 Summer League Results
2024 Summer League Results
The 2024 CorkO Summer League drew to a close this night last week in the picturesque surrounds of Fota House and Gardens. A fitting location to conclude our summer orienteering season surrounded by the vibrant colours and wonderful aromas of all the glorious trees and flora that adorn the grounds. There were some wild roars from the residents of the wild life park too so it was a real feast for the senses.
Once again huge thanks to all the event planners and organisers for volunteering their time to host a fantastic series of events at diverse and scenic locations throughout Cork city and it's environs.
Thanks also to the 173 individuals who took advantage of the long summer evenings and participated at one or more of our summer league events. We have to give a shout out to our ultra dedicated supporters Joe Bosonnet, Fionn O’Callaghan, Ruaidhri O’Brien, Mary O’Brien and Terry Ley who attended all nine events in the league. In doing so they traversed over 40.8km of tracks, trails, forest and parkland across the various Long courses. Will Short course participants amassed at total of 21.4km on their adventures. Well done to all the environmentally conscious orienteers who car pooled or traveled by bicycle and/or train to the events.
Heading to the final event our 2024 Summer League Champions across the courses and categories were already decided but there was still a possible for re-shuffling in some of the podium spots depending on who showed up on the night and ran well The flat parkland terrain and the long legs connecting the House and Gardens to the forest adjacent to the Scout camp typically suits the faster runners in the field. However a few testing controls required some precise and efficient orienteering navigation in the gardens and forest to avoid losing precious seconds to rivals. Furthermore a few discrete control site required eagle eyes to avoid running pass them.
On the Long course Mens section Joe Bosonnet had the 2024 Long Course Men's Championship title secured after the seventh event. Although Kieran Beausang denied him the event winners honour last Tuesday night his speed across the fast terrain secured him runner up spot in Fota and reduced his overall league points tally to an impressive 9pts. Jonathan Lucey didn't make it to the Fota event which meant that only no one could prevent Fionn Buckley claiming the summer league runner up honour. He finished with a total of 25 pts. Heading into the Fota event Fionn O'Callaghan was in third place in the leaderboard with 34 points and Colm O'Sullivan required a top five finish or better to elevate himself into a podium spot. Colm admirably rose to the challenge and a fifth place finish at the event meant he reduced his points total to 34. Fionn O'Callaghan finished 6th on the night and didn't improve on his overall points total which means Fionn and Colm are tied for third place in the final league table.
On the Long Course Women's leaderboard all the podium spots were decided after our penultimate event. Caroline Murray is the 2024 Long Course Women's Champion with a total of 10 points. Mary O'Brien added the Fota House and Garden event win to her points tally which allowed her to discard one of her earlier higher results and reduce her overall points total to 12. Following nine fiercely competitive events very little separated these two great orienteers. Niamh Morrissey took the final podium spot with a total of 23 points.
Aoife Mannix had the Short Course Champion title secured in advance of heading off on her summer holidays to Spain. She was disappointed to miss the final event but could enjoy her holiday safe in the knowledge that she with just 16 points she couldn't be beaten at Fota and is our 2024 Short Course Champion. The Collins siblings Abbey and Daithi both had excellent runs in Fota and finished third and fifth respectively. In doing do they both reduced their respective league points totals strengthened their positions on the Short course leaderboard. Abbey Collins is the Short course runner up with 34 pts and Daithi Collins secured the final Short course podium spot with 53 pts.
Well done to all who completed the league and sure there were plenty of other battles taking place right down the leaderboard. The full league tables can be viewed at the following link:
