2024 Summer League Standing Update

Summer League Standings after 7 Events

Huge thanks to all those who have attended any of our 2024 Summer League events to date.  After seven events in the 2024 Summer league it time for another look at the leaderboard and for some stats updates.

So far we've had 96 individuals take up the Long course challenge and 72 unique competitors on the Short course at the various locations we've visited in this year's league. Just a reminder that competitors must finish 6 events to complete this year's league and receive their league finisher memento. Based on the latest league tables there are currently 15 individual who have completed the league. These dedicated summer league followers have already earned their 2024 league finisher memento.  Another 24 orienteers can join them if they attend one or both of the final league events. After seven fiercely competitive events the league standings are as follows.

Joe Bosonnet still has a commanding lead on the Long Course Men's section. With four event wins in the bag his current points total is 12 and it looks like he can't be caught at this stage. Way back in 2013 Joe was the Short Course Champion and it looks certain that he is going to add the 2024 Long Course Champion title to his orienteering CV. Fionn O'Callaghan currently sits in second place with a total of 38 points while there is currently a tie for third place with both Ruaidhri O'Brien and Martin Condon level on 107 points. Ruaidhri was the 2023 Short Course Champion and it is fantastic to see him rise to the challenge of the Long course this year and be so competitive. It is no wonder is the 2024 M12 Irish Middle Distance Champion.

With two events to go there are a few individual who can still move up the leaderboard and dislodge some of our current podium holders. Fionn Buckley needs just one more event to complete the league and with a current points tally of 22 a good run by him at either of the remaining events could see him elevated to a podium spot. Similarly, Joshua Hoare and Jonathon Lucey both need two more events to complete the league and with their pace and tendency for top ten finishes they could also edge their way onto the podium.

In the Long Course Women's section Mary O'Brien tops the leaderboard with a total of 14 points. Last year's Women's Champion Niamh Morrissey currently sits in second place with 26 points. Just seven points behind her is Liz Deane on 37 points.

However all this could change as Caroline Murray needs just one more event to complete the league and with a current total of just 8 points another podium finish at either of the remaining events would elevate her to the top of the leaderboard. Similarly, Muireann Ni Cheallachain needs to complete two more events to finish the league and given she currently has just 16 points she could potentially claim a podium spot with two good clean runs at the remaining events.

On the Short course Aoife Mannix has a firm hold on first place with just 22 points. The current runner up is Alexis Condon with 106 points. The Short course leaderboard will post likely shuffle a lot over the remaining events with 6 competitors requiring just one more event to complete the league and in doing so they will likely be tussling for a podium spot. The Collins and O'Sullivan siblings along with Emer McCarthy, Aobh Gallagher and Amelie O'Donovan are all contenders for the final honors. Equally a further six individual require two more events to complete the league and in doing so they too could muscle their way onto the final podium. Looks like it will be an exciting finish to this year's Short course competition.

While many can potentially knock our current leaders off their podium spot there is always the potential for these individual to improve their own league standing by bettering some of their current event positions and reducing their final points tally in the process.

One thing for certain is there will be lots of competitive action over the remaining events.

I know many participants enjoy analysing Split times as part of their post race analysis. Unfortunately the link to the Splits browser is still missing from the results on the Orienteering Ireland website.

However, the Splits Browser is still operational and the result from the last  few Summer League events can be plotted using the links below:
