Summer League Results Update after 8 events
Ahead of the final event in the 2025 CorkO summer League it is time for another run down through the current league standings. With just one event remaining it is last chance salon for improving your overall league result.
On the Short course there are now 9 league finishers and Daithi Russell is top of the leaderboard with 8 pts and at this stage can not be beaten so he is our 2025 Summer League Short Course champion. While the Champion is already decided there is a fierce contest ongoing for the runner up spot. After the Glenbower Wood event Mary Ann O'Brien completed her 6th event and in doing so achieved a total of 32 pts which is enough to elevate her into second place. She now has a mere 2 pts lead over Aoibhe Walsh in third place. Following a good run in Glenbower Wood Aoibhe has now leap frogged Laoise O'Mahony in the league tables. All these competitors need good clean runs at our Fota event to maintain their current positions, any errors or poor route choices could result in another shuffle in the podium places. Sure makes for an exciting finish in Fota on Tuesday evening. Further down the league table the Collins family are still battling it out for family bragging rights. Frieda is now tied with Clare Nuttall on 50 pts but Daithi and Ruadh are not far behind them.
In the Long course Mens section, there are now 16 league finishers and Corrin Russell is still out in front 27 pts. There has been some juggling in the other podium spots following last weeks event. A good run by Gerald Duffy in his 6th event means he has climbed up the leaderboard and presently sits in second place with 35 pts. Just 4 pts clear of Fionn O'Callaghan in third place. None of these podium spots are guaranteed as several competitors could muscle their way onto the podium with good strong finishes at our final event. Dan McDonnell must attend the Fota event to complete the league and with a current tally of 10 pts he could potentially pinch the Mens Long Course title at the final event. Similarly, Alec O'Brien on 24 pts also requires one more result. If he has a strong finish this could elevate him onto the podium. Several of out current league finishers could improve their own league standing with good results at Fota. Notable Ruaidhri O'Brien on 41pts and Rob McEvoy on 47 pts. From Rob's 6 events to date there is one irregular result which is distorting his average significantly. If he can eliminate his 26th place finish at Curragh Wood from his results total he could grab a late podium spot.
With 9 league finishers on the Long course Women's section, it is Mary O'Brien with 18pts who still lies top of the league table. Runner up spot is currently held by Una Buckley with 24pts. While Cathy Kennedy has overtaken Elaine Sheridan to take a hold of third place with 43pts. Two competitors can still trigger a reordering on the podium if they attend and run well at Fota. Both Caroline Murray and Niamh Morrissey require one more result to finish the league. Caroline is the reigning Women's League Champion and with a current total of just 10 pts she can still potentially retain her title. It looked like she was on course to do this in Glenbower last Tuesday but unfortunately went over on her ankle en route to the penultimate control and was unable to complete the course. A post event update confirmed that thankfully no bones were broken but it is an ankle sprain. We all wish her a speedy recovery and hope she will be back in action soon. Equally after five events Niamh Morrissey has 11 pts and she too has the potential to secure the Women's Championship title with a good result in Fota on Tuesday night.
With lots at stake in the final event it sure does make for an exciting climax to the 2025 Summer league. Let us see if our current podium holders can handle the added pressure from the chasing pack at the final event. Lots of bragging rights still up for grabs in the last event. Thanks again to everyone who has participated so far. Full league tables can be viewed at the following link:

Be sure to check them out and find your orienteering nemesis and try and overtake them at the final event. If you spot any errors or omissions, be sure to let me know.
To celebrate our league finale and to provide league participants an opportunity to socialize following their run we will be hosting a Summer League picnic at Tuesday's event. Refreshments will be severed following your run... so an extra incentive to run faster! Also a perfect opportunity for some post route analysis and a chance to meet the summer league orienteering rivals you've been chasing all season.
Hopefully see you in Fota House and Gardens for some fast and furious competition and a catch up over some tasty post run grub!Â
