Cork League #3: Knockaculleta Forest Sunday Nov 17th Event Info
The third event in this seasons Cork League will be held at Knockaculleta Forest on Sunday November 17th. This large forest is situated between Bottle Hill, Glenville & Killavullen in North Cork. This is just the second outing on this map since originally used in the early eighties. Resurveyed last year by our club members Jim O'Donovan and Bobby O'Connor. The area is unlike anything else we have orienteered over in recent years as it is an extensive area covered with 30-40 year old trees. The road network is limited in places and there are limited line features (very few ditches) and only vague contour detail. Some of the wood was recently thinned so there are a few brashings, there is also a little bramble in a few areas. Some areas of the forest are extremely fast going & there is little climb throughout. There will be four courses on offer.
Beginners (Yellow) 2.4k 30M climb 8 controls
Improvers (Red) 3.4K 50M climb 13 controls
Short Technical (Green) 5.5k 60M climb 15 controls
Long Technical (Blue) 7.3k 70M climb 17 controls
Start times are between 11.00 & 12.30, with control collection starting at 14.00hrs.
There are several routes to this event but the event will only be signposted from the Bottlehill to Killavullen road, turn east on to the Glenville road (signposts read Killavullen 5k, Glenville 14k) the event is less than 2k up the road. (i.e. turn East off the main Cork-Mallow road for Bottlehill just after Rathduff and continue for 11.5K until the above mentioned turnoff for Glenville )
Alternative approach is through Glenville, drive up through the village and continue out the top road - again in general you are heading in the Mallow direction.
Forecast for Sunday is for a bright and dry day with sunny spells and light winds, but it will be cool. So come out & get your run in!!
