Summer League #5: Currabinny Wood, Ringaskiddy TUESDAY JUNE 11TH Event Info

Post date: Jun 08, 2019 11:58:17 AM

The fifth event in the 2019 Summer League will take place on TUESDAY JUNE 11TH at CURRABINNY WOOD, Ringaskiddy.

We'd highly recommend a visit to Currabinny Wood. This wood is located on a prominent hill on a peninsula overlooking Cork Harbour. The hillock slopes down to the sea on three sides. Legend has it that it's name commemorates a giant, Binne, whose burial chamber surmounts the hill (‘Corra’) to this day. This "Giant's grave" and an octagonal gazebo tea house are just two of the distinctive features on offer in this wood.

It is sure to present new and interesting orienteering challenges to all who partake. Just a reminder that you need to attend 6 events to receive a league finishers why not get them in early!

*****************COURSE INFOLong: 4.3km with lots of climb!

Short: 2. 5km

Short is reasonably buggy friendly.

For all those travelling from East Cork this weeks event is accessible via the Cross River ferry from Cobh to Passage.

The wood is located 5km from Ringaskiddy or 7km from Carrigaline. The event will be signposted from the turn off from the Carrigaline - Ringaskiddy road.

Further woodland trivia and directions are available at the link below.

Start anytime from 5:30pm to 7pm.

The wood is always popular with the locals in the area and the car park isn't huge so parking can be tight. We would encourage you to car pool if you can. When parking please adhere to the directions of our parking marshals and park on the left side of the road. Please don't block the entrance to the one house on the way in and give some consideration for others who may wish to enter/exit the wood while you are on your run.

In previous years the midge population made their presence known in Currabinny Wood. So if you have insect repellent it would be advisable to throw it into the car just in case they are back again this year.
