Summer League #1: Fota House and Gardens TUESDAY MAY 9TH Event Info

Post date: May 04, 2017 11:10:29 PM

I hope you are all as excited about the start of the 2017 Summer League as we are. This year's league will kick off next TUESDAY MAY 9TH at FOTA HOUSE AND GARDENS.

Fota's arboretum and gardens are internationally recognised and have the finest collections of rare and tender trees and shrubs grown outdoors in Ireland and Britain and I'm sure their colours will provide a stunning backdrop for Tuesday's orienteering event.

This beautiful parkland terrain provides an ideal location to commence our Summer League. With a good network of paths the area is very buggy friendly. This location always proves popular with families and is a delightful area for beginners and those new to the sport to embark on some orienteering adventures. The Sprint-O nature of the landscape will also provide several challenges for our experienced orienteers and the fast pace will mean that every second really will count.

Short course: 1.9km  12 controls and is buggy friendly.

Long course:  4.2km  16 controls.

The flat parkland terrain at Fota means the climb is negligible on both courses.

Control descriptions will be printed on both course maps and loose control descriptions for the Long Course will also be available at registration.

Fota is one of the only orienteering events in the country that you can get to directly by train! Timetables on

If travelling by car from Cork city take the N25 East and take the exit for Cobh. The entrance to the House and Gardens will be on your right as you travel along the R624. Take care with the bends on the road.

Further directions and area trivia are available here:

Registration will be in the car park and you can start anytime from 5.30pm - 7.00pm.

Controls will be collected from 8pm.

Our Summer League prices remain unchanged:

Adult: EUR 5

Junior/Student/OAP: EUR 3

Family: EUR 10

SI Card Hire: EUR 2

If you are bringing your car, bear in mind that there is a 3 euro charge to exit the car park, so remember to bring your 1 and 2 euro coins. Car pool if you can.

So why not encourage your family, friends or colleagues to take part and enjoy a fun evening in the outdoors. Beginners and families are always welcome, and we will have experienced club members on hand to explain things on the night and help get you started in the right direction.

Hope you can join us at Fota.
